TIPS -- Thinking of Moving In Order to Get Help
Know your reasons for moving.
Ask:
“Where are
you
most happy living?”
Ask:
“What things are most important to
you
regarding your living situation?”
Ask:
“What will be different for
you
if you move from where you currently live?”
Ask:
“How much will it
cost you to live somewhere other than your home
?”
Ask:
“Have you learned about all of
your
options to help you continue living in where you want to be?”
Use ideas from older adults successfully living at home
Make a
plan
now
for living at home. Don’t wait for a crisis.
Know your “point person.” What family, friends, or neighbors can help you if you need it?
Use your personal dollars to
buy the
right kind
of help for
you
- so you can live in your own home. Hire a neighbor, friend, family member, or an agency to
help
with household chores, rides, meals, medications, personal care, etc. Often this is less costly than paying for 24-hour assisted living or nursing home care.
Make your home environment easier
for
you
.
Use technology to help you with medications, feeling safe, stay connected to family and friends, to turn off appliances, home security, etc.
Work with a Live Well At Home coach for specialized help with planning and managing this risk factor.
